How to Test Your Garden Soil at Home: A Simple Guide
You cannot fix soil you have not measured. With a jar, a shovel and a cheap pH kit you can learn your soil's texture, drainage and acidity in an afternoon, and that tells you exactly what to add.
Start with the jar texture test
Fill a straight-sided jar one third with soil, top it up with water, add a pinch of dish soap and shake hard for a minute. Sand settles within a minute, silt within a few hours, and clay can take one to two days to clear. Measure each layer as a percentage of the total. Around 40 percent sand, 40 percent silt and 20 percent clay is loam, the texture most vegetables grow best in.
Check drainage with a percolation hole
Dig a hole about 30 cm deep and 15 cm wide, fill it with water and let it drain completely. Refill it and time how long the second batch takes to disappear. Roughly 2.5 to 7.5 cm per hour is ideal for most garden crops. If it empties in minutes, you have fast-draining sandy soil; if water is still there after several hours, you are dealing with compacted or heavy clay ground.
Try the squeeze and ribbon test
Moisten a handful of soil and squeeze it in your fist. If it falls apart immediately, it is sandy. If it holds a ball but crumbles when you poke it, it is loam. Roll the ball into a ribbon between your thumb and forefinger: a ribbon longer than 5 cm means high clay, and a sticky, shiny ribbon means very high clay. This field test takes ten seconds and confirms what the jar test showed.
Measure pH before you amend anything
Most vegetables grow best between pH 6.0 and 7.0, where nutrients stay available to roots. Test strips are cheap but crude; a decent digital meter is more useful if you calibrate it and take several readings per bed. Test in several spots, because pH can swing across a yard, especially near concrete, conifers or an old burn pile. Blueberries and potatoes want acid soil near pH 5, while brassicas prefer slightly alkaline ground.
Read the weeds and worms for free clues
Weeds tell you a lot. Dandelions, plantain and sorrel point to acidic, compacted soil, while clover suggests low nitrogen and chickweed suggests rich ground. Do your own worm count too: dig a 30 cm cube of soil and count the earthworms. Ten or more is a sign of healthy, biologically active soil, while two or three means you need far more organic matter.
When to pay for a lab test
Home kits measure texture and pH well but not nutrients. A professional lab test costs little, measures phosphorus, potassium, calcium and organic matter, and returns a fertiliser recommendation built for your crop. It is worth doing every two to three years, and always before a big investment in amendments. Take twelve random cores from 15 cm deep, mix them in a clean bucket, and send about 500 g of the blended sample.

Do a jar test for texture, a percolation hole for drainage and a pH strip for acidity, then write the three numbers down. If nutrients are your question, spend the small fee on a lab test every few years. Measure first, and you will stop buying amendments you never needed.
